SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is a protocol, created to protect the flowing information between users and the servers from spying, correctiong and other hacks. Thanks to it, the connection between the user PC and the site is cripted. The SSL certificate provides high level of security protection. It is mostly used in online payments, online transfers, online banking and more. Even big online stores use it in order to protect from stelling the user information.

There are so called „selfsign“ certificates, which are free, provide cripted connection, but the browsers do not recognize them and show warning messages telling the user that the certificates are not known (come from unapproved provider). Often the messages contain a text telling the users that the informmation they type is not protected. These messages make the users feel unsecure about their personal, bank or any other information, so they can not put they trust on the site. When we talk about online stores, their owners in most cases loose potencial clients. They loose money.

Your SSL certificate should be bougth from an authority and trusted provider, and suitable with more browsers. These kind of certificates guaranee you that the user browsing your site won't get warning messages, and users can also see who sold the certificate and when expires.

The SSL certificate is one per domain and it is really important does the domain contains www or not. Most clients prefer the certificate to be created on www.site.com domains.

Some hosting companies install the SSL certificates for free. In order the SSL certificate to be install properly, the hosting account should be located on a indipendent IP address.

It`s good to know that the most wide spread SSL certs (Rapid SSL of Geotrust) can be used for www.domain.com and domain.com at the same time. You need to order the certificate for www.domain.com (with WWW) and your certificate will be valid for both.
