Building a Dedicated Server Box (on a budget)

I will add something to the thread again

1. Every solution should be chosen based on the price / requirements / profit. If you host a few sites which does not need anything specified, you are okay with shared hosting

2. The sites that go over the limit of the hosting company are not okay and they will start to get you more money. You will have to rent a server, get a collation in server, renting a virtual server or something. The virtual server is the best option it is something that will develop a revolution in the world of software.

3. Home server – to have two isp providers you should have knowledge on how to set up the DNS, what router to use and how much it costs and how to set it up. You will need two different IP addresses; you should know whether the connection supports redundancy or load balancing.

4. If your site is that import and can’t handle an hour loss of uptime, it mean the site is making you a lot of money. Why don’t you get a collated server ready for use?

The whole situation is that a lot of people want to make this free, because there is a possibility to not spend money. But they don’t get the fact it could be more expensive to support a home server. If you have a site and if you can’t afford to have downtime, you can find a better solution that will not cost you even a tenth of the efforts you will put in this DIY project. And consider that when the visitors get more than the server can hold, you will have to get one or two or three or more new server and you will have to put a lot of resources into this.

To have a good server in home is good if you want to do tests or something like that. But for something serious it is better to rely on professionals. I will say it again. If you have a decent website with a lot of visitors, a VPS will suit you like a charm. If you have a website with tens and hundreds of thousand visitors a day you will need a load balancing solution which costs a lot, but this is needed by really small amount of websites compared to the number of small sites.

Running a dedicated server from home

In Bulgaria vbox7 is the only site that really has huge, huge amount of data and need a lot of traffic and machines to hold the load. I agree that is okay to have a good server or a powerful pc in your home if you want to test the new tendencies like the virtualization for example. Unfortunately, that is too far from the web technologies that you will really use to host a website.

ABV use a lot of servers, data, and bandwidth too. They are the second big player on the market.

As long as you need to experiment with virtualization, you can easy simulate a highly loaded environment with a few servers which server dynamic content. You can test the balance of the load too. The virtualization technology give a lot of improvement in the ways to make a test. They are the best thing which happened to us.

If anyone of you remembers how hard was to assemble a server and to get a while system going. Then you had to spend a lot of time in testing. Thanks to virtualization you can do every test just with help of one server and that is good because it really improves the opportunities for us.

I’ve read the thread and I will share my thoughts too.

1. I am disappointed of the fact that no one in Bulgaria will let you host porn and you can’t host a torrent tracker too. I want to host a few thousand porn photos and I want to create a small torrent tracker with just 50 torrents, but I can’t. The prices that the hosts offer in the western countries are too high for me. I will not get millions from this.

2. I decided to try with a PC in home. You are arguing about the electricity but the combination of UPS and Laptop is great. If there is an outage they can guarantee you a minimum of 2-3-4 hours of power.

3.
The internet sucks too. I have free wi-fi from the moment my provider told me that he wants the money on every 1st date of the month. I will not give him a cent. The free Wi-Fi is kind of strange but It is available. If needed I will pay for a good connection and I’m sure I can find it.

4. I have two PCs and the first one is a palmino 1400+ with 3GB of RAM. Is that enough to host a website in the beginning and can it support a decent site? I can have as much space as I need that is cool and no one will censure me.

The basic idea is that I’m pissed about the amateur porn in the country and I want to make a free fan site.

Dedicated Server Hosting Guide

I had a DC server before a few years and I had 50-60 users. It matters the upload speed of your connection. If it is not high enough you will have problems when 10 or more users try to do something simultaneously. :)

In my opinion, when you can go above the requirements and when you have a good computer, it can happen. :)

How to turn a computer into a dedicated server?

I use both of the types – home and rented and I can say that if you do it like it should be done, you will have no problems.

Dumb thread – server or home computer. The home server is still a server.

If you are comparing a server held in home and a server held in a hosting company, you will not find a difference.

If you want to host a game server for example or something like that you can’t get it running on a dedicated server.

And I want to ask will you use a whole server for a single website? That is hilarious.

How to Make a Dedicated Server | Home Server

The thread is very interesting and I will soon buy and setup a server on my own. I’m on that vibe and I will share my views, but first I want to as two questions. :)

1.
Can someone tell me what virtualization is because it seems interesting?

2.
I’ve read the whole thread and I saw a few posts which say the server should be hermetically closed. Can someone tell me why, because I can’t explain it to myself? I see it like a person closed in heretical container without air. I’ve seen a lot of photos of servers closed in a box or something, but it has to be cooled right? I can’t really understand it. It is like a car with a blocked potty and without the cooling which automatically turns on at 120 degrees.

Virtualization means virtually to chop one server to several smaller pieces using parts of the ram, cpu and the hard drive. On every part you can put a standalone OS and every part works independent. For the case, I’ve seen cases with ionized boxes which prevent dust from forming in there. Maybe it has something to do with this.

Without reading the last pages I can tell you that there is no reason to host at home. You will have a lot of problems with the electricity, the internet and the technic. Buy a hosting it will be okay for you. If you

How Do I Make a Dedicated Server?

I rely on my personal server backed up by linux and a ups. I can’t trust anyone. I’m not sure about the security the defense etc. I don’t pay for hosting, because I have enough servers for my needs. In my opinion the home server is a lot more durable.

How to Set Up a Dedicated - Home Server

A few negative to host a PC at home:

1. Overheating of the system in the summer – it causes a lot of headaches and expenses for new parts :)

2. It is expensive to have a good internet connection that is suitable for hosting – possible, but hardly achievable.

3. Electricity is not that cheap

4. When you are not at home and something bad happens, there is no way to call da support to resolve the problems.

There are a lot more, but this are enough. Of course there are positive sides of hosting at home, but for now that’s it from me. :)

Personally, I’ve made a few tests on different computers at home environment at the same time I’ve made these test on servers in a data center. I have that opportunity because of my work.

The difference is from the earth to the sky, it all depends on the price. If you can afford something really cheap at home, you will for sure change your mind. There are a lot of risk factors in your home server. If it is for personal use, go ahead. A few outages because of electricity or internet are okay, but when you sell your service to someone it is totally unacceptable. It will be one of the worst services on the market. The positive to have a home server is that you can always check how it works in the other room, but nothing more.

I am happy that my company lets me put my pc in their data center for testing purposes. I have a KVM and have no problems with heat. The prices are lower than ever, you can afford it for sure. The collation price is around 50-60 euro a month.

Dedicated Server vs Home PC

The topic is interesting..IMO:

PC – files

Server – site

There are a lot of things in an infrastructure, which you can’t see – backup (software/settings/hardware). It is not like a single computer can handle it all. I see the virtualization is something that you like, but we can’t describe it all here. The big data centers are using it and put 100 smaller servers on a 1 megaserver to save from electricity, space, ups and of course that way they don’t need a lot of staff to handle everything.

There are a lot of types of virtualization and you can virtualize even a single window, or an app, or an os…whatever you want.

For 50-60 EURO you will gate a server with 8GB RAM, Intel Quad Core Hyperthreading, 2 750GB hard drives. You don’t need to mess with personal servers that will cost you 1000 euro plus collation fees every month. :)

Dedicated Server or Server / Workstation

Everyone who talks about durable internet, expensive internet, business internet, talks useless stuff If he can’t prove his words in some way. The use of the aforementioned words without having knowledge on ip/mpls is crucial for your professional look. In most of the cases the words shared connectivity, guaranteed connectivity, guaranteed connectivity, unshared connectivity and so on, are not used right. I think that the mass user will recommend you the easy way – hosting / VPS/dedicated server. We can compare this to going to work with a taxi. To have a private machine and collation is harder, you go to work by driving your personal car. How do you go to work?

Anyone here using CDN?
