Negative keywords are a core component of a successful keyword list. I must say first that there is a common misconception that improving click through rate on broad and phrase match will improve quality score. The truth is, only exact match CTR will improve quality score. The reason to improve CTR on broad and phrase match is to improve on your bottom line or cost per acquisition (CPA). Right? Or?

Negative keywords are keywords within a paid search campaign that prevents your ad from showing up. For example if you are promoting a mobile phone app, but not one available on the android platform you want to place android as a negative keyword so your ads do not show up when someone is searching for phrases like mobile apps android . this ensures that your campaign targeting a more qualified searcher improves budget spend and prevents ads from showing up in irreverent and possibly inappropriate searchers .

In other words: Negative keywords are used in keyword advertising to prevent ads from being shown when the search terms contain the negative keywords. For instance, a realtor who sells houses in Omaha could specify "commercial" as a negative keyword so that their ads do show for searches upon "Omaha real estate" but not "Omaha commercial real estate".
