My post about "What is a Dedicated Server?" is for those, who are new the hosting world and want to get a little bit more familiar with the service - getting dedicated server.

Let's start with a little definition:

Dedicated server hosting also known as managed hosting service, dedicated hosting, managed colocation, DS. It is web based server, where you have use unlimited options (most of the time) and resources for your business. The control there is full (you have full root access and server administration), unlike the shared hosting. In some cases the administration consoles to manage the server. Once you get dedicated server, you must know what access your plan provides.

The main thing you have to know about the dedicated server, that you rent a web hosting plan, where you are on your own. There is a support, but goes with extra fee. This kind of hosting is recommended to site with a huge amount of traffic. Sites that need more resources (more than 30 million visits per day) - space, speed. The server is managed and configured by an administrator form a distance (remote control), talking about the software. The hosting provider is only supporting the hardware, if there is some problems with the machine. This plans are preferred by large companies and big sites for many reasons. It is madness to put your valuable web resources on a small plans and expect to work properly.

After renting a dedicated server, the company will configure it and provide you the way it will work for your. The OSs here are mainly Linux, Windows (XP, 7). The machines are located into data centers, where the technical team is responsible for their safety, production.

Basically, one dedicated server provides stated amount of memory, hard disk space, and bandwidth - this is the number of gigabytes of data (information) that can be delivered each month. As you expect, fully managed plans (dedicated servers) can be much more expensive than a self-hosted option, unless you have the time and inclination to look after your server 24/7, you might be better off looking for some sort of managed hosting plan. Also there are announcement systems (send SMS, emails), that can let you know when the server is down or not visible.

This is the basic, will continue adding new stuff here.
