I'm a small business person here; I do everything myself.
I have a seasonal post that I update and publish twice a year. I also have a canonical page with the same content, but I find it best to publish the material as a blog post.
You can imagine - I used plugins to clone and "create a new draft" and probably even cut and pasted it back to the beginning, more than 20 times in total. So there's old code in there and it's decided to use a certain old photo as a thumbnail for social media and other sharing. It's not just Facebook/Meta; I tested BlueSky too and it happens if I paste the URL into an email.
The photo isn't even in the post anymore. I've specified a new featured photo, reworked the post in the Facebook debugger just to address FB, but no change. I looked in the HTML and the photo isn't there.
I need to leave the photo in my media file as I use it for other posts.

Besides creating a new version with "clean" text and newly inserted pictures, what can I do? Is there supposed to be metadata somewhere that does this? Or a way to delete just the thumbnail?
